Most of the structures are of a sacred character; and columns, obelisks, sphinxes, colossal statues, mysterious sculpture, and subterranean palaces, all fail not to move powerfully, and fill the mind with images of gorgeous magnificence and costly labor.On the western bank of the Nile are the Tombs of the Kings, the spots chosen by the ancient Egyptian mo-narchs for their eternal abode.
